The 勿体無い instinct among smolnetters to wanna fully use old stuff like email, usenet, gopher, IRC, typewriters, old phones, PDAs, C64s, S-expressions, calligraphy, telnet… I feel it too. Strongly. That’s absolutely an aesthetic pull I share. I don’t always give in to it, because some things really don’t make sense, but I often do.
Part nostalgia and part sustainability and part trying to make the world less broken by looking at the highlights of the past. It’s often not rational, which I’m trying to cultivate an awareness of. But it’s just one more thinking hat that De Bono missed. The nostalgia beret. It can sometimes come up with some great solutions.
