The Super App

With a patronizing scoff of pity I looked at a tyrannical app in another land. It was a “Super App” called WeChat or KakaoTalk or LINE or Grab or Gojek. Every human being in that land needed the app. You needed it for transportation, for buying things, for identification, everyone had to have it.

Why didn’t the government intervene and stop that monopoly? Because in some ways the app was beneficial for bad-faith actors in that government. They could more easily monitor and control their population thanks to that app.

It was with relief I looked up and saw that I was here in the good old home where we are not beholden to the “Super App”. But the relief turned to a feeling of crushed ice in my exhale as I thought about it for three seconds longer and realized with fear that we do labor under a super app to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.

That app has two names. Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
